Probation Hub content principles

We’re always on the look out for fresh content for the Probation Hub. Here’s a few basic principles we try to stick to that may help you decide if the Hub is right for your information.

The Probation Hub is…

  • A portal of news and information relevant for all colleagues.
  • A signpost and launchpad to help direct users to sources of information.
  • Our shop window for partner organisations and stakeholders.

The Probation Hub isn’t…

  • A secure place for sensitive or operational information.
  • A document repository.
  • A replacement for HMPPS Intranet, Equip, myLearning and other channels.

Hub style…

  • Aims to engage audiences by being clear, getting straight to the point, and using inspiring, emotive language.
  • Uses plain English and avoids long or complicated words when short or easy ones are available.
  • Has an inclusive, conversational tone that avoids technical language and jargon.
  • Uses short sentences, usually no longer than 25 words.
  • Is focussed on the reader perspective (not that of the organisation / workstream)

We’re time conscious

  • We assume our readers have busy day-to-day jobs and consume our content on the go.
  • We are mindful that hardware is not always readily available, and colleagues will use mobile devices to view the Hub. We minimise the need to scroll wherever possible.
  • We aim to deliver everything the reader needs to know in the first 80 words; anything after the first 80 words is supplementary information.
  • Our ideal article length is 200 – 300 words
  • Our ideal video length is less than one minute

We aim to format content…

  • Using a brief, explanatory headline
  • Explaining what’s happened/happening, why and when, in the first paragraph
  • Then outlining the benefits for the organisation, person on probation, and colleague
  • End with a call to action for the reader (What would you like them to think, feel or do?)

Our single thread

  • All our content should connect directly or indirectly to Our Vision: Working together to protect the public and help people lead law-abiding and positive lives.
  • It should be able to be categorised within the four principles that underpin our vision: Enable people to be their best; An open, learning culture; Transform through partnerships; Modernise our estates and technology
  • And, if possible, it should showcase excellent outcomes in: Protecting the public; Reducing reoffending; Decent and safe prisons; Diverse, skilled and valued workforce; High-quality sentence management
