Diversity and inclusion in the MOJ

The MOJ is striving to build a world class organisation that is open and inclusive and truly values and celebrates the diversity of its workforce, and can understand and serve the needs of the diverse society of which we are a part. This is regardless of social background, gender, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, beliefs, disabilities, long-term illness or caring responsibilities.

Whilst we are a large organisation, with courts, tribunals, legal aid offices, prisons and probation services right across England and Wales, the MOJ strives to put diversity and inclusion at the core of all that we do. Our aim is to build a strong and successful workplace with a workforce that at every level reflects the diversity of the society in which we deliver our services. It is an inclusive workplace that supports the wellbeing of all our staff and values and  champions difference as a strength, encouraging staff to be themselves and deliver their best at work.

To enable us to create a diverse and inclusive workplace, it is important for staff to complete their diversity data on SOP as part of their induction process. Completing your diversity data is optional. A ‘prefer not to say’ option is available if you choose not to provide this information for any of the protected categories, but having this information will enable us to better understand the needs and experiences of staff and ensure that HMPPS is a workplace where all can thrive. Any diversity information entered is not visible to your line manager – it will remain confidential.

Probation Equality, Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging (EDIB) Action Plan

We launched our first Equality, Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging (EDIB) Action Plan specifically for our probation workforce in April 2021.  NPS and CRC colleagues were invited to the workshops that informed the development of this plan, so we’re keen to share it with you as key stakeholders ahead of unification.

This has been developed to ensure we have inclusion and belonging at the very heart of our new Probation Service. To make this happen we must focus on our staff: enabling them to be their best and deliver excellent, professional services so that we get the best outcomes for victims, people on probation and communities.

A PDF version of the EDIB Action Plan is available here.
