Job Evaluation Scheme

Overview

Job evaluation is used to compare and measure the relative demands of jobs across the Probation Service, usually as the basis for placing roles within the organisations pay and grading structure.

When an existing job description changes, or a new job description is created, the role is subject to evaluation using the organisations Job Evaluation Scheme (JES).

In the Probation Service we use two Job Evaluation Schemes:

  • National Negotiation Council Job Evaluation Scheme for Probation Service Bands 1 to Band 6
  • Hay Job Evaluation Scheme for Senior Bands A-D

How evaluation works

A job evaluation can be initiated by the organisation or by staff in the role. It requires sign off from a Director before it can be progressed.

Evaluating a job involves gathering information about the tasks and activities undertaken in that role. This is recorded in specific templates and presented to a panel of trained evaluators.

The panel will assess and score the information provided to determine the pay grade assigned to the role.

Panels members include Probation Service employees who work across the business and new members are sought to be trained in JES evaluation from time to time.
