Job Evaluation Review 2021

Overview

A review of the Probation Job Evaluation Scheme (JES) process was undertaken jointly with trade unions in July 2021.  This identified a number of recommendations on how we approach job evaluation differently.

A central Job Evaluation Management Group (JEMG) has been established to ensure the short and medium-term recommendations from the review are implemented. You can read more about this in this Review Report on the HMPPS intranet or in this one-page summary.

How this may affect you

A short-term recommendation from the review is to map all probation roles that have current job descriptions. This is to understand if a job needs to be evaluated.

This exercise will categorise each role under a Job Evaluation Scheme (JES) status as follows:

  • Evaluation not required – the role has not changed since it was originally evaluated
  • Awaiting job evaluation review – some changes in the role have been identified requiring an evaluation
  • High priority job evaluation required – the role is new or significant changes in the role have been identified requiring an evaluation

The mapping exercise will take time to complete due to the number of roles that need to be reviewed. You can follow progress on the Job Evaluation Review Tracker.

When a mapping exercise is completed and jobs are identified for evaluation, they will be assigned to a group. Colleagues can then use this group information to see the evaluation timeline for each role, including when they will be asked to engage in the process.
